Girl Power: New Opportunities for Everyone

The 28th March marked a very special day in Germany, Girls'Day. This is where young children had the opportunity to get involved in a nationwide career orientated project for girls. They learnt about different career sectors and got to meet some powerful female role models.

This year, as part of Girls’ Day, we welcomed students to our Wuppertal and Hamburg sites in Germany, to help them find out more about what we do here at PPG. The participants learned about various diverse career profiles: at PPG, having a diverse workplace is really important to us!

Wuppertal

The day started with an introduction to our company and an exciting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Quiz’. The girls then embarked on a guided tour around the production plant, exploring different job opportunities.

Afterwards, the students participated in two different practical experiments. The first was an Easter egg competition where the eggs were coated and decorated with nail polish in one of our water containers. The varnishes used showed a relation to each of our industrial coatings which are manufactured by our chemical lab technicians.

In the other experiment, quality assurance tests were carried out, giving the students a closer look into the daily tasks of the department. Finally, the day was rounded off with a meal in the canteen.

This inspiring day in Wuppertal was organized by Jula Gutsche, PPG student trainee sales office; Vivien Wuester, PPG student trainee Human Resources and Yilmaz Gueler, PPG production trainee spray production.

Hamburg

We were also lucky enough to host a number of children from schools around Hamburg. Lydia Schroeder, PPG site administrator and Sven Weinem, PPG technical service manager, organized the whole day. After breakfast, Sven and Lydia gave the children a tour around our facility. Students discovered how our products are developed, starting from the initial idea right through to customer shipping.

They particularly enjoyed the tour around the automatic dispensing unit. Kids then painted a model rudder of an airplane and learnt about the science behind colors. Together with Sven and Lydia, the children discussed what they thought of the whole PPG experienced over lunch.

We’re proud to be involved in this project and we hope that it was an exciting opportunity for the girls to learn about different jobs that were previously unfamiliar to them.
