Denmark Students get the Opportunity to Solve Real-Life Production Issue

Employees at the PPG facility in Søborg, Denmark, recently assisted students aged 13 to 15 from Mørkhøj Skole with solving a real-life production issue related to conveyor belts.

According to Lars Thomsen, Head of Product Management, Scandinavia, the goal of the workshop was not to find the best solution, but rather to teach the students about the problem-solution process.

To solve the problem, students utilized the school’s Digital Learning Lab – a science, technology, engineering and math-focused learning center with virtual reality (VR) equipment, computer, digital projector and more – funded last year by the community engagement grantmaking.

Problem solved!

Each of the three groups offered different solutions – One group wanted to extend the conveyor belt; another group proposed preventative maintenance using cameras to track activity; and the final group suggested a solution that involved a robot instead of a conveyor.

It is very impressive how far the students have developed their skills in this digital world. The pupils already handle the competencies, skills and technology so well.

Show must go on…

Two of the students involved in this project have since been chosen to participate in the Danish Championship in digital skills at the Danish Learning Festival, an annual event in the local education community. These students will present the solution to the conveyor belt that they devised with the help of PPG employees from the Søborg facility.

In addition, a group of students from Mørkhøj School participated in the local Lego League, ranking eighth out of 32 teams. This is a first time they participated, thanks to LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robots. These pieces of technological learning equipment are also available to the students through the Digital Learning Lab.
