‘A Girl’s Passion for STEM Should Be Taken Seriously’

Though Ana Pozuelo, EHS manager at the Camarma de Esteruelas site in Madrid, Spain, has been knee-deep in COVID health and safety issues in the past months, making sure her colleagues are staying safe and healthy, she couldn’t let the girls on the STEM Talent Girl program down during this summer. In fact, she went over and above to make sure her contribution to the PPG-supported program was of value – and it was!

Inspiring Girls in Spain to Follow their STEM Dreams

STEM Talent Girl is an annual educational program promoted by the nonprofit ASTI TALENT AND TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATION that aims to develop talent, and inspire and empower girls in Spain to pursue brilliant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers.

Our colleagues in Spain have been proud to support the projects ‘SCIENCE for Her’ and ‘Mentor Women’ for the past two years. Talented girls (aged 14 – 17) are offered masterclasses, job shadowing, and mentoring by women professionally engaged in the fields of science and technology.

In 2019, Ana was invited to be a mentor in the program’s first year – to share her experience, offer insights into what she does and conduct site visits.

The girls’ concerns were not so different from mine when I was their age. The interest they have in scientific and technical careers should be taken seriously.

STEM Talent Girl 2020 – Making It Happen!

It was an inspiring and enriching experience for Ana. The moment she heard about the 2020 sequel, she immediately knew she wanted to participate.

I knew this would be a challenging and time-consuming project for her. But I was confident, because once Ana commits to something, she makes it happen!

Due to the global pandemic, the STEM Talent Girl 2020 program had to be adapted – with the majority of activities and workshops held online. But this didn’t curb Ana’s enthusiasm!

Even though she was working from home, and very busy with COVID-related issues, she accepted the invitation to be a judge panelist in one of two live-streamed competitions for girls in the “Mentor Women” project. Her role was to evaluate the work of ten girls across a wide range of subjects, including technology, robotics, mobility, medicine and data treatment.

Although I had never done anything like this before, I had no doubt it was going to be an amazing experience. To see the innovation and the quality of the girls’ work gave me confidence that there are many opportunities for the future. It gives me hope for a better tomorrow.

She took it on herself to start learning about all the girls’ subjects in order to be able to evaluate the work and offer constructive feedback. She even spent her free hours studying to make sure her contribution would be of value for these girls.

Ana’s Role in Creating a Better World

Like for many of us, the environment, health and safety team of EMEA recently had to reorganize their days to work from home. Ana’s access to the operations area was restricted. But, the team overcame the difficulties together.

The best part of my job is knowing we are taking care of people and the environment and that we are trying to create a better world.

Despite the tough times, Ana never holds back when she’s given the chance to make a difference. She feels #PPGProud to be part of a company that supports education programs, which are crucial in creating opportunities and helping us progress as a society.

Ana's availability, commitment and enthusiasm in supporting a project in which she really believes and identifies with, are also very present in her daily work, helping our facility to become a safer and more sustainable place every day.

As Ana points out, the STEM Talent Girl project is very special to her because we are providing resources and tools to help girls see the potential in STEM careers, an area in which women perform really well when given the chance. For the academic year, 2020/2021, the program continues to benefit more girls and involve a broader audience through online tools, including a brand new resource – STEM Talent Girl Online Platform!

Carlos Urrutia, PPG automotive adhesives & sealants country manager, España
