'It Always Feels Good to Do Good'

Kevin Van de Vyver has been with us just 10 months, but he already totally embodies The PPG Way. When at his desk or “in the field” with customers, he is our business development manager Benelux for the Automotive Refinish business. On the days that he’s not, he’s helping those most in need during this difficult time.

A keen automotive enthusiast, Kevin was lucky enough to turn his hobby into his career. He is responsible for creating sales opportunities in the Benelux market and coordinating strategies with the EMEA business development team.

A Positive Contribution to Company and Community

A large professional organization like PPG offers the tools and possibilities to be successful in a challenging market.
Kevin gets a lot of energy and motivation from making a positive impact – no matter how small – to the common goal. At work, this means placing the focus on where he can make a difference, being a valued member of the team and creating success for the entire organization.

When COVID-19 hit the scene, he knew he wanted to have a similar positive impact in the local community.

A Manager at Work, a Red Cross Volunteer in His Free Time

Kevin had already been keeping a close eye on the development of the crisis in his local community in Belgium. When the situation started getting worse, he took days off work during calmer periods to volunteer locally, wherever he could help. Although his local hospital seemed to be coping, he reached out to other organizations engaged in supporting people during the crisis, like community networks helping the vulnerable with shopping and the Red Cross.

The Red Cross was looking for volunteers at their triage centers, where patients are tested for coronavirus, so he didn’t hesitate to sign up. Selected patients are sent here based on their doctor’s advice after a telephone pre-screening. Red Cross volunteers take care of the patients from their arrival at the triage center until the doctor can examine them. More precisely, this means that the volunteers provide them with all PPE (personal protective equipment) and guide them safely to the registration area and, subsequently, to the waiting room. Afterwards, the volunteers are also responsible for disinfecting every surface the patients came in contact with.

The process must be executed with great care, making sure patients follow all hygiene and safety guidelines. I feel like I’m making a valuable contribution to our fight against the virus.

Staying Connected with Friends, Family, Colleagues and Customers

As his day-to-day workload has lightened, Kevin is able to dedicate more time to the international projects that form part of our long-term strategy, getting ready for when daily business resumes. He’s also been catching up on his reading, taking walks and enjoying time on his sunny terrace.

This period gives us more time for activities we enjoy but don’t always have or take enough time for. It gives us the chance to realize what is really important and what we sometimes take for granted. So that we emerge from the crisis with valuable takeaways, focusing on what really matters.

But one of the most important things for him is staying connected to friends and family, as well as colleagues and customers.

These are difficult times for all of us, and it really helps to get through them together.

He sees this period as a rare occasion for us to step back and reflect on “life as usual” – on the rat race we often subconsciously find ourselves running in.

Kevin and his contributions to the local community are a great inspiration for all of us. Let’s all take this time to find ways of being better than we were yesterday, and then carry those insights with us every day.

We’d love to hear more inspirational stories like this. Please send in your nominations of PPG colleagues who are making their community a better place during this challenging time to ppgpeople@ppg.com!
