Rosa Never Underestimates the Power of Paint
Rosa nunca subestima el poder de la pintura
When Rosa Torrents, PPG raw material manager for Packaging Coatings, based in Spain, heard that the new COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® project was going to help students and those at risk of social exclusion, she knew her love of painting, organizational skills and good relationships would bring excellent value to the team. And she was right!
“A Force of Nature”
As you can imagine, being responsible for raw material management worldwide requires Rosa to wear many hats and to work closely with multiple departments. She says that meeting people from different regions, managing information through various sites, and helping whenever and wherever there is an issue are what motivate her.
According to those who know her, Rosa is positive, selfless, caring, reliable and hardworking. In fact, she has been leading the Charity Partner program in Rubí since 2017. Therefore, it came as no surprise that she jumped at the chance to help project leader Carina Gomes, communications & community engagement specialist, Portugal & Spain, with the most recent Colorful Communities project in Spain.
Using the Power of Paint to Refresh and Inspire
Associació De Solidaritat I Ajuda Veïnal (ASAV) is a local non-profit organization that supports people in danger of social exclusion due to a difficult economic situation or lack of employment by offering searching for housing, workshops, training, counseling and job seeking support. They also run a solidary grocery store called “Botiga Solidaria” that provides basic needs items.
ASAV knew their offices, training room and grocery store were in need of a refresh, so they gladly accepted PPG’s help to brighten their spaces.
ASAV team then drew the PPG team’s attention to a group of 21 students aged between 14 and 15 from a local school (Maristes) who wanted to cheer up their playground with some color. After hearing the details of the project, we decided to help them paint a mural that would reinforce the values of diversity, inclusion, respect and sustainability.
“We Can Breathe Now”
Due to the complexity of the work, and to ensure safety due to COVID, a contractor painted the ASAV spaces. White was chosen to give a sense of space and freshness. Cristina Almirall, the ASAV’s general manager commented:
For the mural, local muralists Esmeralda Hernández Fernández and Natasha Ruzafa helped come up with the sketch based on the ideas provided by the students during two workshop sessions. The artists then drew the picture on the wall, before supervising the volunteers in painting it and making final adjustments.
The goal was to support the students’ initiative, promote teamwork, encourage inclusivity and strengthen relationships.
A Dedicated Team with a Big Responsibility
10 PPG and eight other volunteers spent two days and 120 hours of their personal time to paint the mural. Both projects – the ASAV and school mural – took over 20 days to be completed and used 150 liters of white paint and 85 liters of paint in 13 shades from the Seigneurie® PANCRYTEX D2 AÉRO range.
Rosa says it was great to see the team gathered to help despite having to wear masks in the hot sun, which was “very tiring, but definitely worth it to ensure safety!”
She had never painted on a wall before and found it harder than expected.
Other volunteers were keen to express how much they enjoyed their experiences, saying how nice it was to disconnect and relax into the painting, how they never thought they could achieve anything like this, and how happy it made them to do something nice for the kids.
A Powerful Message in Paint
Rosa was heavily involved in preparing the material for the project and says a project like this requires a lot of work. And although this was not the largest Colorful Communities project that a team has ever undertaken in Spain, with the current restrictions, the organization of both projects at the same time was challenging.
The ASAV spaces now provide better conditions to support people in need. Plus, the school’s mural helps reinforce the values of caring, protecting one’s community, and a sense of responsibility towards each other.
Cuando Rosa Torrents, PPG raw material manager de Packaging Coatings, ubicada en España, se enteró de que el nuevo proyecto COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® iba a ayudar a los estudiantes y a las personas en riesgo de exclusión social, supo que su gusto por la pintura, su capacidad de organización y de mantener buenas relaciones, aportarían gran valor al equipo. Y no se equivocó.
“Una fuerza de la naturaleza”
Como se puede suponer, ser responsable de la gestión de las materias primas en todo el mundo requiere que Rosa realice muchas tareas distintas y trabaje en estrecha colaboración con múltiples departamentos. Para ella, conocer gente de diferentes regiones, gestionar información de distintas plantas, y ayudar cuando y donde surge alguna dificultad, es lo que más le motiva.
Según quienes la conocen, Rosa es una persona positiva, desinteresada, solidaria, confiable y trabajadora. De hecho, ha liderado el programa Charity Partner en Rubí desde 2017. Por lo tanto, no fue una sorpresa que haya aprovechado la oportunidad de ayudar a Carina Gomes, communications & community engagement specialist, Portugal y España, que ha liderado en el reciente proyecto de Colorful Communities en España.
Usando el poder de la pintura para refrescar e inspirar
La Associació De Solidaritat I Ajuda Veïnal (ASAV) es una organización local sin ánimo de lucro que tiene entre sus fines promover la acción comunitaria y solidaridad, y mejorar las condiciones sociales de las personas en peligro de exclusión social debido a la situación económica precaria o falta de empleo, ayudando en la búsqueda de hogar, proporcionando talleres ocupacionales, formación, y asesoramiento en la búsqueda de empleo. También gestionan un espacio que simula un supermercado normalizado - "Botiga Solidaria" - y que proporciona artículos de primera necesidad.
ASAV sabía que su oficina, sala de formación y Botiga Solidaria necesitaban una renovación urgente, por lo que han aceptado con mucho entusiasmo la ayuda de PPG para dar nueva vida a sus espacios.
Mientras tanto, el equipo de ASAV llamó la atención del equipo del PPG respecto a un grupo de 21 alumnos de 3º y 4º de ESO de una escuela local (Maristes) que querían alegrar su patio con color. Después de conocer los detalles del proyecto, decidimos ayudarles a pintar un mural que iba enfocarse en los valores de la diversidad, inclusión, respeto y sostenibilidad.
“Ya podemos respirar”
Debido a la complejidad de la obra, y para garantizar la seguridad debido al COVID, se ha contratado un pintor para renovar los espacios de ASAV. El color elegido fue el blanco para dar una sensación de amplitud y frescura. Cristina Almirall, general manager de ASAV, comentó:
Para el mural, las muralistas locales Esmeralda Hernández Fernández y Natasha Ruzafa ayudaron a dibujar el boceto a partir de las ideas aportadas por los alumnos durante los dos talleres qua han realizado con ellos. Las artistas dibujaron el boceto en la pared antes supervisar la actividad de pintura con los voluntarios y, después de terminar las pinturas, hicieron los ajustes finales para que quedara perfecto.
El objetivo fue apoyar la iniciativa de los estudiantes, promover el trabajo en equipo, fomentar la inclusión y fortalecer las relaciones entre ellos.
Un equipo motivado con una gran responsabilidad
10 voluntarios de PPG y ocho voluntarios externos dedicaron dos días y 120 horas de su tiempo personal para pintar el mural. Los dos proyectos – la pintura de ASAV y el mural de la escuela - tardaron más de 20 días a completarse y utilizaron 150 litros de pintura blanca y 85 litros de pintura en 13 tonos PANCRYTEX D2 AÉRO de la gama Seigneurie®.
Rosa señala que fue estupendo ver el equipo reunido para ayudar a los demás, y que el hecho de tener que usar mascarilla a pleno sol fue "muy agotador, ¡pero definitivamente valió la pena para garantizar la seguridad!"
Ella nunca había pintado en una pared y le resultó más difícil de lo esperado.
Los demás voluntarios también expresaron lo mucho que disfrutaron de la experiencia, diciendo lo agradable que fue desconectar y relajarse mientras pintaban, cómo nunca pensaron que podrían lograr algo así y lo felices que estaban de hacer algo bueno por los niños.
Un poderoso mensaje a través de la pintura
Rosa estuvo muy involucrada en la preparación del material para el proyecto y dice que una iniciativa como esta requiere mucho trabajo. Y aunque este no ha sido el mayor Colorful Communities que un equipo ha emprendido en España, con las restricciones actuales, la organización de ambos proyectos al mismo tiempo fue un auténtico reto.
Los espacios de la ASAV ofrecen ahora mejores condiciones para apoyar a las personas en dificultades. Además, el mural de la escuela ayuda a reforzar los valores del cuidar, la protección de la comunidad y el sentido de la responsabilidad hacia los demás.
