Daniela: The Stylist Behind New Automotive Colors in Italy

Daniela: La Stilista dietro ai Nuovi Colori dell’Automotive in Italia

Daniela Nicolelli, our styling center manager for Automotive OEM Coatings, Italy, lives and breathes color. In celebration of International Colour Day this year, she tells us about how she transmits her passion into car paint, and shares her well-regarded expertise with the automotive industry in Italy.

The world of color always surprises me and I love to surprise my customers as well!

A Piece of Humanity That Lives in Each Color

Daniela’s passion for design and art started at a young age and she has been dealing with colors in one way or another ever since.

I like to see the emotional aspect of color, the ‘humanity’, that lives in each color.

While she was studying architecture at university, she got into interior design and gradually started cultivating her eye in color and design for the automotive industry.

I believe that color gives the right energy to people and it’s also a means of communication. It has a different purpose for each of us.

Color Communicates Essence

At PPG, Daniela’s principal role is in serving the main Italian OEM brands part of the Stellantis Car manufacturer group in EMEA. She also helps our Automotive Refinish business create custom style finishes for the important Special Cars Group and luxury segment.

Driven by her curiosity and the desire to always go a little further, Daniela believes in transparent and profitable interaction with collaborators and colleagues.

Trying to anticipate even the most distinctive requests always makes my work interesting. I’m really happy when I can help automotive designers create and select the color that best fits a specific car model.

She explains that color, together with shape, is the first distinctive element of a car as it helps to fix a model in the memory of the end customer.

A car’s color is like a special outfit – a costume that really communicates the real essence of the car.

And she can feel in her gut when a color is right! Daniela is proud that it was she who suggested the unusual color of blue instead of red for the launch of a sport’s model of a valued customer. This became a real hit.

“Deep down within myself, I was sure that this would be a success for them.”

Translating Extra-Ordinary Ideas into Paint

A part of Daniela’s job is forecasting color trends for the automotive industry in Italy and arranging a biennial color show for Stellantis designers.

Last year, the event, called Extra-Ordinary, revealed 80 new colors that will influence a transformation in the fields of design, mobility and lifestyle over the coming years.

"My job is to translate stimulating ideas into paint and offer our automotive customers the best color collection. We achieve this by combining technical feasibility and advanced design research – plus always keeping in mind our mission of protecting and beautifying the world!"

In 2020, the theme of the event, which was streamed online for the first time, was “radiance and luminescence”. It played with shimmers, accentuated shadows and liquid metallization using warm colors like browns, oxides, indigo blues and dusty pinks.

The theme seemed particularly suitable for the difficult moment we are experiencing, and we interpreted it with tones that convey serenity and optimism.

Paints for the Future

“A color can be playful and fresh, elegant and sophisticated, sporty and bold. It can be many things and many moods,” says Daniela. But she has also noticed an inclination toward colors influenced by the virtual world.

We are able to translate this into paint by combining bright chroma colors mixed with slight hue shifts, which gives a very digital and futuristic look.

She tells us that recent times have suggested a trend in automotive designers looking for functional and sustainable qualities alongside the aesthetic features of the paint.

Daniela and the PPG Global OEM styling team are deeply interested in the possibility of communicating more committed messages related to the concepts of sustainability. They believe we can achieve this through colors by investigating alternative pigment sources and a radar-enabled solution for self-driving vehicles as well.

Feeling at Home at PPG

One of the things Daniela enjoys most about her role at PPG is that she can “transfer her passion for color to everybody.” She feels there is much opportunity for professional and personal growth and is proud of the attention paid to customer satisfaction.

She values her relationship with colleagues and the chance to discuss and exchange ideas with those from different business units.

PPG represents a strong part of my life and in a way, I always feel like being at home. I enjoy working with my amazing team very much and all the people that are part of the company.

Tradurre Idee “Stra-Ordinarie” in Vernici

Sentirsi a casa in PPG
