Paint Brands Celebrate Centuries of Innovation

This year, five PPG paint brands are celebrating hundreds of years of paint history and colorful coatings innovation. That’s quite an achievement in today’s global marketplace and we couldn’t be prouder.

Our coatings have stood the test of time, and are a testament to the innovation and quality that have differentiated our brands for generations. We are very proud of our efforts to protect and beautify our communities through the centuries, and we look forward to serving our customers for decades to come.
Jason Metcalf, Marketing Director, AC EMEA West & Central

This year marks an astounding 300 years of innovation for Sigma Coatings by PPG. What started in 1722 in the Netherlands with milling pigments in a windmill grew into a global professional paint brand, renowned for its excellent quality of products and aservices.

The Sigma Coatings portfolio features a range of high-performance coatings, including Sigma Allure, Sigma Perfect and Sigma Pearl Clean. Its products are available in 13 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

This is such an exciting opportunity to celebrate the craftmanship of professional painters. They are the ones who have made the craftsmanship evolve over the years. As with National Painters' Day, we want to thank them as they protect and beautify the world day in and day out.
Ann Heylen, Marketing Manager, Sigma Coatings

Professional painters and their craftsmanship are the center of Sigma Coatings celebrations, and are featured on social media, in advertisements, with giveaways and more. Watch the past, present and future brand videos to learn even more!

Launched in 1922, Leyland Paints was one of the first to pioneer emulsion paints for homeowners with its introduction of Leytex Water Paint. The paint was a gamechanger and remains a bestseller today.

Backed by the success of Leytex Water Paint, Leyland grew to develop and manufacture a full range of retail products under the Leyland brand, as well as comprehensive coatings solutions for the trade industry under the Leyland Trade umbrella. Based in the United Kingdom, where Leyland Trade has been recognized as one of the leading business brands in the country, Leyland and Leyland Trade paints are now available across Europe.

We’re dedicated to making the lives of tradespeople and DIYers easier by keeping our product ranges focused and simple, and putting quality before quantity. We look forward to celebrating with our customers throughout 2022 – and here’s to the next 100 years!
Natasha Ram, Marketing Manager, Leyland Trade

Leyland is sharing its centennial achievement in stores, across social media, and with customers and employees through games, contests and a birthday celebration at our manufacturing site in Birstall, UK.

Tikkurila by PPG celebrates its 160th anniversary this year. Beginning as an oil press in Finland in 1862, Tikkurila is now an international paint manufacturer and became a part of PPG in 2021. Today, Tikkurila products are manufactured in seven facilities in six countries and are available in more than 40 countries.

Sustainability has always driven product development at Tikkurila. In fact, Joker, the first waterborne paint for interior use, and Valtti Wood Care, a bio-based wood oil for outdoor use, are market leaders that are also the most sustainable products in their category. Sustainability will continue to guide Tikkurila innovations in both paint and packaging.

Tikkurila is a very well-known and highly valued Finnish brand. Our growth comes from our people and their expertise. We tell our anniversary story through them – they’re very much a part of our success.
Hanna Kauko, Head of Communications, AC EMEA North & East

As part of its “Pioneers of Colour” celebration, Tikkurila is hosting customer and employee events, highlighting employees at each of Tikkurilas seven manufacturing sites and supporting a scholarship program at a local high school.

Gori by PPG dates back to 1902 when Wilhelm O. Ehrenskjold first introduced GoriOil to protect wood against shipworm and gribble. The brand took off in the 1960s after the housing boom created a big market for the treatment, protection and maintenance of wood elements. It was a strong foundation to grow from - today Gori remains a leading woodcare product across Europe.

In 1971, Gori raised the bar again when it announced its ‘non-polluting procurement of wood protection,’ making it one of the first paint brands to begin incorporating sustainability into its operations. Gori’s connection to the ‘natural wonder of wood’ and its commitment to sustainable practices continue to guide the brand in the 2020s and beyond.

Through the years, the colorful Andy the Mouse has helped Gori get the word out about its high-performing coatings. He’s so popular that he even made it to YouTube, and has helped the brand celebrate its 120th anniversary on social media, on billboards and in other advertisements.
