Cees Is Spinning a Wooden Web of Innovation

Cees Spint een Houten Web van Innovatie

Now in his 25th year with us, there’s nothing Cees Brandjes and his ‘dream team’ in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, doesn’t know about wood coatings. What drives innovation in the world of wood coatings? And how is his team helping to push the sector into a more sustainable space?

The Spider with a Web of Wood

Cees Brandjes works as PPG Centre of Excellence (CoE) manager for wood coatings. His team of paint developers drive new and innovative developments for wood surfaces. They also collaborate closely with the portfolio development team.

While the portfolio development team is responsible for short-term developments (<1 year) and new products in existing product lines, Cees’ wood development team takes care of longer-term innovative developments (2-3 years) and test drills.

Both teams work on solvent-based and water-based trim paints and wood care formulations, developing new wood coatings for professional trade, DIY and retail customers across Europe.

I have an excellent team and dedicated colleagues. Working in ‘dream teams’, as we call them, as ‘One PPG’ really motivates me to bring new innovative products onto the market.

Cees works alongside the technical product management and supply teams in relation to developments and potential innovations. He says he feels like a “spider in the web of all new wood coating developments”.

Bringing projects to a successful end makes my job interesting.

The Innovation Station of Wood Coatings

The innovations that the wood development team works on are based on customer needs, own Research & Development ideas, as well as ideas from other PPG teams. They take around 2-3 years to develop and could be new opaque wood paints or transparent wood stains. They might dry faster, have better durability, improved application or any other feature you might think of!

We are always exploring whether we could use other PPG innovations in our wood coatings, and the other way around, following the ‘Search and Reapply’ technique.

The team recently developed the paints for the PPG SprayMaster®, a new low-pressure spray system with paint cartridges that was launched in the Netherlands on March 1, 2021. Cees expects it to be “revolutionary to the professional paint market.”

He is excited about the many upcoming development and innovation projects currently in the pipeline. Cees wishes he could already tell us more about them, but we will have to wait and see!

The Role Of Legislation in Innovation

When Cees started in the wood coatings team, he remembers they focused most developments on improving solvent-based formulations as water-based formulations were considered lower performing.

When the Netherlands enforced a new legislation prohibiting professional painters from using solvent-based paints inside, it initiated many water-based developments (in particular, our very successful SIGMA COATINGS® S2U Nova technology platform).

Later, the new European VOC (volatile organic compounds) legislation instigated changes to almost all solvent-based formulations, which resulted in a slower drying time. Cees’ team responded by developing fast-drying solvent-based alkyds. The first of which, Sigma Coatings Rapid Gloss, was a great success.

We were very #PPGProud to win the PPG Innovation Award in 2016 for our Rapid product line and PPG Sustainability Awards in 2019 and 2020 for two other Rapid launches.

Looking Toward a More Sustainable Future

Looking ahead, Cees sees legislation continuing to be important to development, especially with the European Green Deal legislation and REACH regulation forcing more change.

There is a clear trend toward more sustainable solutions, using more sustainable raw materials, changing production processes, improving application efficiencies and extending the service life of our wood products.

Cees is particularly proud of Sigma Coatings S2U Allure, the high-performance solvent-based exterior wood coating that comes with a 10-year guarantee. It won a PPG Sustainability Award in 2013 and is still one of our best-selling products in the Netherlands.

He has two catchphrases that help him stay positive and open minded in everything he does: “Yes we can” and “Just do it”. No wonder he works in innovation!
