Petra: How PPG SPRAYMASTER Was Born

Petra: Hoe PPG SPRAYMASTER Is Geboren

Our Architectural Coatings (AC) team in the Netherlands recently launched PPG SprayMaster®, PPG’s first-ever architectural paint spraying system specially designed for exterior woodwork. Petra Sanders - Van Der Heijden, our technical product manager for lacquers, trim & specialties, Architectural Coatings, Northern Europe, shares the six-years-long rollercoaster journey with us, all the way from the first idea to the final product!

Giving Life to Ideas

The application center in Amsterdam is always looking for innovations in the field of ease of use. They are searching for ways in which we can help support the work of painters and make our paint systems even more user friendly for them.

Six years ago, Petra and the application team noticed that, despite the many spray guns on the market, none tackled outdoor painting of woodwork. The guns also could not solve the issue of overspray (and its polluting effect on the environment) that occurs when using indoor spray guns outside.

They also noted that there are fewer and fewer professional painters in the Netherlands.

We asked ourselves, what if we could produce a spray gun that could not only paint outdoor trims to perfection while protecting the environment, but would also speed up application, so one painter could do more in a shorter time?

Petra’s role in the SprayMaster project was to ensure all teams had all the technical information they needed to develop their part of the total system.

I made sure all tests done correlated with practice, that they would deliver the data we needed, and that I would be able to give all essential information to the marketing team.

The Development of SprayMaster

The team combined knowledge from an earlier project (a bag placed in a bottle that fills with air, slowly emptying the bottle) and a patented spray gun that a supplier shared with them.

The two ideas became one and the first working model of SprayMaster was born!

They focused not just on ease of use and quality of finish, but also on the ergonomics of the device.

The next challenge was developing a paint for this new machine. Since painting was faster, the R&D team needed a paint that would dry quickly, too. They chose a water-based paint because it dries in just four hours, instead of 16.

Finally, the teams spent the last two years of the project on testing the SprayMaster in the field with large paint companies.

Success Is Just a Spray Gun Away

As Petra explains, the SprayMaster works like a cartridge system. The PPG paint cartridges simply click into the machine, making changing color very easy. Cleaning is a breeze too, as there is only one place where paint comes into contact with the machine.

This breakthrough technology makes it significantly easier, up to 50% faster and much more efficient to paint outdoor trim. Plus, it nearly eliminates overspray!

The final paint result is so smooth that it seems to come straight from the factory.

Now, PPG field engineers will go on a COVID-safe road show through the Netherlands on our PPG SprayMaster Wagon offering personal demonstrations to customers, painters, and architects.

This project is special to me because it is the first where we not only developed the paint but also the equipment to apply it. It shows how much knowledge we have together.

Making Work and Life Beautiful

Petra joined us in the R&D department of Protective and Marine Coatings (PMC) 33 years ago! She spent 10 years there, moving to the technical support department of trade for Benelux, and all the way to her current role.

What she enjoys most about her work is getting to collaborate closely not only with a large part of the organization, but with our customers too.

My job is not just work that I need to do to get paid. I love my work – it is part of my life. I cannot imagine not working.

But she says it would simply not be possible for her to fulfill her job with such passion were it not for her family. They support her in every step she takes.

As a mother of an 18-year-old son, one of her goals is to show him that you cannot change the world on your own.

Working as a team is what makes life beautiful. Not only in work but also in our everyday lives.

Succes is Binnen Spuitbereik
