Stratifying Clear Coat - Innovation in Automotive Coatings
PPG’s stratifying clear coat technology was a huge hit at the international SurCar conference in Cannes! The groundbreaking coating was developed as the demand for colour differentiation in the automotive sector grows.
There's also growing interest in new textures, sparkle areas, and intensity. The stratifying clear coat technology was designed to satisfy these appetites and will be used by Mercedes-Benz to generate effect coatings.

After analysing various effect pigments for their stratifying properties in coating formulations, the PPG team and its research partners found that the use of stratifying pigments in clear coats could generate new, cost-effective effects for car bodies. The technology could also be used to create three different colours with one basecoat by spraying the gloss, matte or stratifying pigment version of the clear coat.

Armed with their breakthrough new product a team of PPG clear coat specialists, in partnership with colleagues from Daimler AG, went to Cannes to showcase the results of the two year R&D process that went into this amazing coating.
Martin Schuenemann, manager, top coat systems development for passenger cars, Mercedes-Benz, presented the project to conference attendees. The bi-annual Surcar event is considered one of the world’s leading congresses on automotive body refinishing. It brings together an international audience of decision-makers and experts in automotive body painting from over 25 countries.
