Architecture, Archaeology and Automotive Coatings - Welcome to Caivano

Our Caivano automotive coatings plant is located in the Italian region of Campania in south west Italy. The site's specialty is in the production of different resins and coatings selling in to different Markets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia (China and India), Central America and Latin America in addition to PPG’s affiliates.

130 members of staff work out of the plant Ingrid Cardinale, Resin Process Engineer EMEA, has offered to give us a taste of life in the neighbouring cities, Naples and in a second edition, Caserta.

Naples is for everyone; from museum and opera lovers to tourists and foodies!

You can discover Naples by foot or move from place to place on the metro. Every station gives the traveller the chance to marvel at the artistry of the architecture, Toledo station being particularly breathtaking.

Ingrid suggests booking a room in a Bed and Breakfast near the historical centre of the city so you can, “breathe the real scent of Naples”.

Areas of Interest

Start your tour from Piazza del Gesù, in the heart of Naples: explore the beauty inside the church of Gesù Nuovo with its grandeur of the Baroque, featuring  works of art Luca Giordano, Solimena.
The famous Church of Santa Chiara exhibits some of Giordano's most severly gothic yet gorgeous mosaics.

Stroll along the famous, ancient Roman street Via Benedetto Croce, it's nickname 'Spaccanapoli' is derived from the nature of the street as it cuts through the centre of the old city. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells along this busy road.

Continue along Spaccanapoli to reach Via Duomo, where the main cathedral of the city is situated.

Head inside the 13th-century church to see a statue of San Gennaro, Naples' patron saint. Hear about how three times each year a vial of the saint's blood is brought out to see if it liquefies – signifying prosperity and safety for Naples. Look for other works of art in the Duomo, including 4th-century mosaics.

Enjoy your tour with a sweet bite of two of Naples' favorite pastries – the 'Sfogliatella' and 'Babà.' The former is a flaky shell-shaped pastry with a filling of sweetened ricotta, the latter is a small cake saturated with liquor (typically rum).

Then reach the most amazing attraction in Naples: Via San Gregorio Armeno. You can admire numerous shops with creative nativity scenes and figurines in all variations and at Christmas time thousands of home made decorations are on offer. During the festive season in Naples, more than half a million tourists from all the world come to see the shops with the original miniature figurines.

The best historical pizza places are all located along Via dei tribunal ( Vesi, Sorbillo, Presidente, Di Matteo, and less popular one) so you can take a rest there! In the area there are some typical restaurants where you can taste the famous spaghetti with ragù or lasagna. All the restaurants are small and rustic and you can be sure that all of the food is authentic and homemade!

Archeologic Museum and Pompeii

The infamous Archeologic Museum is the most important place in the world with regard to its exhibits and works of Roman times, the site is the richest source of Italian archaeological works. And make sure you carve out some time in your agenda to really appreciate the cultural and historical significance of Pompeii which was buried under meters of ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses and visitors can freely explore the ancient ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city.

Vesuvio

Discover the wonder of Europe’s only active volcano: Mount Vesuvius. Hike to the top of the notorious volcano, where you’ll find stunning views of the Bay of Naples and the surrounding landscapes.

Tour Maschio Angioino ( Castel Nuovo) , Palazzo Reale, Teatro San Carlo, Piazzo Plebiscito Castel dell’Ovo and sea side

Its scenic location and imposing size makes the castle, first erected in 1279, one of the main architectural landmarks of the city. Situated opposite the Molo Beverello on one side of Piazza Municipio, it was built on the orders of Charles I of Anjou. It was called "nuovo" (new) to distinghuish it from the city's other castles, and it is named Maschio Angioino in honour of Charles of Anjou.

Teatro San Carlo (Saint Charles Theatre)

Perhaps Teatro San Carlo is not the first opera theatre in Italy but it's definitely one of the most gorgeous and is located very closely to the gulf of Naples. Drink a coffee and try a pastry at a historical coffee bar such as Gambrinus or Caffè del Professore bar and take in the sites of the Piazza del Plebiscito.

The Royal Palace and church of San Francesco di Paola dominate the square. The Royal Palace  was built in the 16th century during the Spanish Viceroyalty, but was also the residence of the Bourbon, of Joachim Murat and Savoy. Now you can breathe Naples!

Go for wonderful walk near the sea and the beautiful sky scrapers with all the spectacle of the gulf of Neaples and Vesuvio. Along your walk there is the “Catell dell’Ovo” Eggs Castel, Neapolitan people said that has been built on an egg! Make sure you keep an eye out for the second instalment from Ingrid where we hear a little more about the Caivano plant and she takes us on a tour of Caserta.
