How Bert Is Teaching Old Paint New Licks

Hoe Bert Oude Verf Nieuw Leven Geeft

Bert Dijkema has had a long history with us at PPG. And by long, we mean almost four decades! Now working at our Amsterdam and Uithoorn sites in the Netherlands, he is helping to put obsolete products to good use by reworking them into new products. But his journey to where he is now is just as fascinating!

“37 Years of History in a Few Sentences”

Today, Bert is our Returned Logistics Department manager (in Dutch, Materialen Ompakken & Distributie, MOD), responsible for reversed logistics, sales of surplus stocks and reworking returned products. And, since 2017, he has also been our site manager for the Amsterdam and Uithoorn locations.

Entrepreneurship, creativity and diversity – that is how I would describe my roles in three words. And it’s why I like my job so much.

But back in 1983, at the age of twenty, Bert started at PPG as a quality control officer at the factory lab of SIGMA COATINGS® in Zaandam. Then, after a learning trajectory, he became production planner and was seconded to the wall paint factory in Uithoorn.

In 1992, Bert joined the start-up team at our then-new Amsterdam factory as planner in the waterborne production department. And from that point onwards, he was unstoppable – moving from planner to supervisor, to department manager, and finally to plant manager, a role he held for five years.

A Connector and a People Person

Bert deals with a diversity of subjects on a daily basis, including quality, logistics, export, customers, and legal issues – sometimes all on the same day – which he says makes his job very dynamic.

Motivated by a sense of entrepreneurship and the opportunity to make a difference, Bert loves that he gets to stay in direct contact with our products. He also creates solutions that turn problems and/or costs into products and profit.

I literally feel and smell the product and stay in contact with the people on the shop floor.

He considers one of the most important tools to be “a good team of people you can rely on”.

I have a wonderful and experienced team of engaged people and together we are always able to beat a challenge using our talents.

Giving New Life to Old Products

Bert tells us that the most interesting part of his reverse logistics role is recycling returned goods into new products through “blending”.

The idea was born in the 1980s when Bert’s predecessor at Sigma Coatings would travel the world with a backpack and paddle to test the quality of Protective and Marine Coatings paint stored at shipping docks. He would sell obsolete stock to the local markets and send the rest back to a warehouse in Amsterdam. It was he who suggested using reworking obsolete materials back into saleable goods. And though the location of this work has since changed, the team still performs this important job.

Returned goods of similar nature are mixed together, quality tested, brought back up to spec and returned as a B choice brand for special customers and outlets.

Last year we received 638 kiloliters of materials. 99% of it was reused, reworked, or sold. Less than 1% became waste.

Live Your Life as It Comes

When he was 15, Bert wasn’t interested in school, but in making music. He was a guitarist but changed to bass at the age of seventeen and had dreams of being a musician.

I played in a lot of bands and toured in Japan with a rock band called Valentine.

Today, Bert and his wife, they have been married 26 years, have two daughters (30 and 24 years) and a grandson, Frenkie, who was born in August 2020.

An important life lesson was realizing that by becoming a quality controller and learning on the job, he was able to develop himself in a completely different way.

It brought me to where I am now – without having a high level of education or chasing a career. Stay with yourself, use your talent and live your life as it comes.
