The Light and Easy Way to Sustainability

Cap sur le Développement Durable avec Light & Easy

De ‘Light & Easy’ Weg naar Duurzaamheid

We are proud to kick off our first-ever PPG Green Week with a story about our colleagues who are focused on innovating, creating and marketing more sustainable products. These help us minimize our carbon footprint. Let’s hand it over to Yann Monnin, based in Rueil-Malmaison, France, and Matthew Percy, based in Uithoorn, the Netherlands, so they can tell us about our excellent LIGHT & EASY™ technology!

Showing Off How Sustainable Our Products Are

Matthew Percy works for our Product Sustainability Centre of Excellence (CoE), which provides our teams with expertise and advice on the sustainability of our products, Green Building Standards and sustainability certifications.

He is responsible for delivering life-cycle analysis, which explores the environmental impact of products throughout their life-cycle.

Sometimes it makes sense to choose raw materials that have a higher environmental impact, if it means saving more than that environmental impact during the use stage.

Matthew is proud that PPG is constantly innovating and says that, while developments are often technically focused, many times there is a hidden sustainability element.

Discovering and quantifying this element and showing just how sustainable our products are is what I find interesting.

Influencing the Products of Tomorrow

Yann is the leader of the Interior Wall Paint and Façade R&D CoE and thoroughly enjoys the diversity of subjects he gets to manage and the opportunity to influence the products of tomorrow.

The aim of our CoEs is to develop new concepts, boost innovation and bring them from idea to the market.

His team is responsible for initiating and developing new projects and helping balance R&D and marketing to ensure proper development while keeping an eye on the novelties occurring outside of PPG.

He takes great satisfaction in seeing people using the products we have developed and remembering all the effort the team put into their development.

I am convinced that we can improve daily lives in our own way, by reducing risks at work and decreasing our carbon footprint.

Introducing Light & Easy Technology

Our Light & Easy range has been designed to improve painters’ daily lives as well as their health and safety in the workplace. The technology uses lightweight components to reduce paint density. This means the cans are lighter, which reduces the risk of injury caused by repetitive strain. The product is also easier to apply, so the job is finished faster!

Within the EMEA region, Light & Easy is a full range of products (from thin film to elastomeric paints) that is chiefly used on exterior masonry, where painters have to carry cans onto scaffolding on a daily basis.

Yann was directly involved in its development and uses dessert imagery to explain the concept: Replacing normal paint with Light & Easy is like replacing chocolate with chocolate mousse. While the volume remains the same, the weight of the chocolate is considerably reduced.

Though not necessarily the desired result when it comes to chocolate, lighter paints enable us to reduce the weight of our cans by up to 40% without compromise to performance.

Not only do lighter cans protect painters, but they protect the planet by reducing the carbon footprint. Lighter paints require less energy to transport and less raw material to paint, bringing up to a 25% carbon footprint reduction.

The Importance of Teamwork in Innovation

Yann tells us that he is most motivated by the people he works with and how engaged they are in “making it happen”. In fact, he says that connecting people was key to making the Light & Easy project a success.

As a team manager, he missed seeing the Amsterdam and Ruitz teams during the pandemic, despite the regular discussions and exchange points, as he considers face-to-face contact important when instilling momentum and building team spirit.

Nonetheless, the Light & Easy range was launched successfully and to much acclaim.

I trusted them and am proud of them because they have been able to adapt and adhere to this new dynamic. I really felt a common energy on all levels to be ready on time.

Laten Zien Hoe Duurzaam Onze Producten Zijn
